And they anticipated that the new boss in DC would unlock much-needed funds to the Palestinians after their budget was significantly trimmed in 2018.,"In his visit, Joe Biden is not going to deal with the most acute issues that have been bothering the Palestinians," says Hani Al Masri, a Ramallah-based political analyst. "They will not talk about freezing Israel's settlement activity. Nor will they focus on Israel's attacks on worshippers, or their arrests and assassinations. They will only speak about how to make sure Abbas survives and remains in his seat.",Abbas has become increasingly unpopular with the general public in the Palestinian territories. According to a recent poll, conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, more than 70 percent of Palestinians would like Abbas to resign, and 84 percent believed his government was corrupt.,But so far as Washington is concerned, says Al Masri, it is vital Abbas remains in position as he adheres to the security cooperation with Israel and is opposed to Hamas and this is why Washington would like to see him stay put, the analyst argues.,Shifting Interests,However, there's another reason Washington supports Abbas - America's domestic policy and its national interests.,"Right now, there are many other issues that occupy decision makers in Washington ahead of their mid-terms in November. One of them is Ukraine. Another one is their struggle to replace Russian energy. A third is the Iranian nuclear file. They have no room for any Israeli-Palestinian peace process," explains Al Masri.,Israel, for its part, doesn't seem interested in a peace process either. Although Prime Minister Yair Lapid, during his first official trip to France, said he would be willing to meet Abbas, such a meeting has not been scheduled. For the next three months, the Jewish state's interim PM will be busy with his pre-election campaign. It is not in the interests of any side."。    함께 기소된 공무원들 선고유예                   최윤홍 전 부산시교육청 부교육감. 국제신문 DB지난해 4·2 부산시교육감 재선거를 앞두고 교육청 공무원을 선거 준비에 동원한 혐의로 재판에 넘겨진 최윤홍 전 부산시교육청 부교육감이 항소심에서도 피선거권 상실에 해당하는 형을 받았다.부산고법 형사2부(부장판사 박운삼)는 26일 지방교육자치에 관한 법률 위반 등 혐의로 기소된 최 전 부교육감에 대한 검찰과 피고인 측 항소를 모두 기각했다. 이에 따라 1심이 선고한 징역 10개월에 집행유예 2년이 유지됐다.항소심 재판부는 최 전 부교육감이 2심에서 범행을 인정한 점을 고려하면서도 형을 낮출 사정은 되지 않는다고 판단했다. 재판부는 최 전 부교육감이 교육감 후보 출마 직전까지 교육감 권한대행으로 근무한 점을 이용해 선거에 필요한 자료를 확보했다고 지적했다. 오랜 기간 교육공무원으로 근무해 정치적 중립 의무와 그 중요성을 잘 알면서도 자신의 선거상 이익을 위해 범행한 점도 불리한 사정으로 봤다. 최 전 부교육감은 지난해 3월 재선거를 앞두고 교육청 공무원에게 선거운동 기획과 실시에 관여하도록 한 혐의로 기소됐다. 재판부는 함께 기소된 공무원 2명에 대해서는 양형이 무겁다는 주장을 받아들였다. 이들에게 내려진 1심의 징역 6개월에 집행유예 2년을 파기하고 각각 징역 6개월의 선고를 유예했다. 선고유예 뒤 2년이 지나면 형 선고의 효력이 사실상 사라진다.。
